We are a sustainable creations studio
ITOSHIGE STUDIO is a creative practice centered on upcycling cardboard into valuable creations for storage and home objects through hands-on craftsmanship inspired by the simple lines of Japanese minimalist design.
What began as an exploration of material constraints gradually became a philosophy: by working with simple, discarded organic materials, we rediscover the value of making with our hands. Cardboard as an undervalued material —often seen as temporary and disposable—reveals unexpected strength, beauty, and possibility when approached with skillfulness, care and intention.
Through its sustainable creations design, templates, books and videos, ITOSHIGE STUDIO proposes an alternative relationship with objects: slower, more mindful, and rooted in the process rather than urgency of consumption.
Each creation is designed not only to be made, but to be understood—inviting makers to observe, think and reconnect with creation urge and the organic existence of the material itself.
Why we do it
The Power of Handcraft
Making things by hand is not about efficiency or perfection. It is about agency and connection. DIY allows us to understand how things are built, how materials behave, and how our decisions shape outcomes as the basis of human evolution. Even simple creation can restore confidence, curiosity, and a sense of connection to our inner world and surrounding. The benefits of handcraft are numerous and we invite you to explore them.
Upcycling as a Moment of Awareness
Upcycling is more than reuse. It is a pause—a moment to look again at what we usually discard or consider futile. By transforming cardboard into sustainable creations as artful and functional objects, we begin to question the definitions of value, waste and potential. This shift in perspective often extends beyond materials, holding the power of influencing and eventually transforming how we see and live our everyday life.
Sustainability and Wabi-Sabi
Sustainability is a technical challenge, as much as a cultural one. Inspired by the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, we embraces imperfection, transience and restraint. Objects do not need to last forever to be meaningful; they need to be used, cared for and understood. Sustainable creation is important because it offers a vital and personal alternative to large-scale consumption, fostering personal well-being while contributing to sustainability of our communities.
We believe in transformational power of collective effort & individual actions.
At ITOSHIGE STUDIO, we strive to integrate and lead our sustainable creations practice in support of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as our joint mission set to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.
We advocate for the use and re-use of sustainable and organic materials, exploration of ways to reduce waste in our homes and communities, application of life-cycle thinking and opting to embrace circular design whenever possible. These principles can widely apply to our day-to-day as much as to the making of our sustainable creations.
We are on the look out to network for sustainable innovation and social impact. We want to encourage our ITOSHIGE STUDIO community to do the same by researching opportunities in your local communities!
